DETAIL
NOTE
This smoky quartz was mined in the Shishikawa area, located east of Takachiho Gorge in Miyazaki Prefecture.
“Shishikawa” is read as shi-shi-ka-wa.
This area is known for smoky quartz.
Interestingly, very different types of quartz can be found just a few kilometers apart—from silky white quartz to deep brown smoky quartz.
This specimen is an intergrown crystal exhibiting Dauphiné twinning, with well-developed x-faces beneath the terminal facets on nearly all prism faces except one.
It also features a large, well-defined Isis face.
A pointed tip at the base produces a clear sound when touched, giving it a “singing” quality.
The transparency is exceptional for smoky quartz, allowing you to see through to the opposite side.
Fine ledges across the surface give it a delicate, silky texture.
Smoky quartz of this size and clarity is quite rare, especially from Japan.
The termination is slightly tabular, with traces of limonite adding natural character.
Its warm, deer-like tones beautifully reflect the name “Shishikawa.”
Miyazaki Quartz is very popular because the amount of mining is small and future production is unknown, and because it is a source of the legend of the descent of the heavenly grandson.
I believe that the reason this region is special that has begun to produce suggestive crystals with distinctive shapes and mysterious appearances.
It is hand-mined deep in the forests of Miyazaki Prefecture.
A certificate of origin from the miner will be attached.
